European Hydrogen Auctions Show Promise in Early Going

Auctions are already proving to be effective as a market-based tool for advancing green hydrogen production projects in Europe. Some examples of the progress being made on projects receiving awards include:

Måde (Denmark Auction) – 12MW green hydrogen plant for industrial and port applications – Project developed by European Energy A/S and is in commissioning.

Kassø (Denmark Auction) – Expansion of green hydrogen-based e-methanol plant to 60MW – Project developed by European Energy A/S and is expected to begin commercial operations by year end.

Eemshaven (Netherlands Auction) – 50MW green hydrogen plant with intended offtake from industrial and transportation sectors - Project developed by RWE which closed an offtake tender on August 17th in order to reach final agreements that would enable FID by year end.

H2Global Lot1 (H2Global Auction) – On August 29, H2Global affiliate HintCo signed definitive agreements with Fertiglobe to import 19,500 tons of green ammonia from Egypt to Europe starting in 2027 and scaling up over time. To make the green ammonia, Fertiglobe has, in turn, signed an offtake agreement with Egypt Green Hydrogen which is developing a 100MW green hydrogen plant.

SkiGA (EHB Auction) – Fuella is developing a 130MW electrolyzer plant to make hydrogen for green ammonia. The project entered into a PPA for renewable energy in April and German utility EnBW agreed to begin marketing the ammonia to potential offtake customers in Germany in July.

Future auctions may also promote trade of clean hydrogen between Germany and Australia and Germany and Canada with bi-lateral funding administered by H2Global.
